A Day at a VIDAS Clinic 2003
|
|
A somewhat typical day at the clinic…if there is such a thing.
Volunteers wake to another beautiful day in Akumal. The birds are singing the waves are gently crashing on the beach and off everyone goes to enjoy breakfast at Turtle Bay Café. Supplies are packed and after devouring a delicious meal, or eating it in the car, we leave to go to the clinic. Today’s clinic may be held in any number of places – from a school room in a pueblo, to a hotel room, to any empty space that is available. Supplies are unloaded and the space is set up to accommodate intakes, waiting areas, surgery and recovery. Often the waiting area becomes the recovery room at some point during the day.

By 9:00 the people start to arrive with their pets.
It is never a slow day because volunteers, sometimes with the help of locals, will go and round up as many strays as they can find.

Everyone is ready to go. The animals are registered and waiting to go.

In the waiting room volunteers comfort them and let them know everything will be all right,
 while owners watch from outside.

The Veterinary students and Vet Techs prep the animals for surgery.

The veterinarians work diligently.

As soon as one is finished he is sent to stage one recovery, within the surgery room where the veterinarians are close at hand

until they are awake enough to be moved to the full recovery room,

where volunteers again comfort them.

It is not until the last cat or dog is fully awake and ready to be sent home that the day is done.

And before everyone can leave the cleanup must be done. The sun is setting and the beautiful day is over – most have enjoyed another vacation day in paradise but for these volunteers the memories are very different. This is truly a life-altering experience! And proof one person can make a difference – when we work together!

In the future we will be devoting more time and volunteers to do educational programs with the local community –

especially the children.
