Education Classes a Big Hit!!
|
At VIDAS’ July clinic, the daily education classes for the local children were an enormous success! Everyday, the kids gathered early, eager for their daily class to begin. Some of the most enthusiastic ones arriving hours before the scheduled one o’clock start time. Word got around the neighborhood fast - each day there were more and more kids! VIDAS volunteers, Dr. Silvia Rodriguez and Dr. Celeste Park had lesson plans ready for them – a different lesson and activity each day with different levels of activity to challenge all ages of children. The hour long classes covered topics such as:
-How to safely approach an unfamiliar animal
-Dog postures and body language and what the dog is trying to tell you
-A math exercise emphasizing the importance of spaying and neutering for population control
-How to care for your pets at home and what are your pets basic needs?
-Common preventable diseases of pets and the importance of vaccinating your pet
All the kids were very interested in learning about these topics and the discussions were lively and very interactive, but the highlight of each class was coloring time! VIDAS supplied coloring crayons and each day’s subject had a related worksheet or coloring sheet that was handed out to each child. The sheets allowed the kids to have some fun with coloring while reviewing the topic from the preceding discussion. After sharing their masterpieces with the VIDAS volunteers and crew, the kids took them home to share with their families and friends. We had some true artists in our classes!!
VIDAS is very proud to provide basic education to the children who come to our clinics. We believe that through education of the children, we can foster respect and an improved standard of care for dogs and cats for generations to come. VIDAS would like to thank all the kids (and future veterinarians) from Nicte-Ha who participated in our classes and hope that they had as much fun as we did!
