The July 2005 clinic in Playa del Carmen was my first VIDAS experience. Several months prior, my husband saw an article mentioning VIDAS, and forwarded it to me, knowing I would be interested. I checked out the website, e-mailed Ruth, and said I would be there in July. What a wonderful, gratifying, humbling experience. Now I'm hooked, so I'm sure I'll be back for many more clinics.
I grew up in Burns Lake, British Columbia, and Cortez, Colorado. I knew veterinary medicine was my calling since about age 10. I worked as a kennel attendant starting at 16, progressed to veterinary receptionist, eventually to technician, and then plunged into vet school. Somewhere in there I went to undergraduate school at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, got married and divorced, and gave children's piano lessons (among other odd jobs) to make ends meet. I graduated from the veterinary program at Colorado State University in 2003, and then spent several months satisfying (temporarily) my need to wander the planet. Eventually I had to work, so Cottonwood, Arizona became home, and since then I've worked my rear end off at a very busy small animal hospital.
The wonderful Josh, who loves animals just as much as I do, has been my husband since the middle of vet school. We have three furry kids: Socorro, my constant collie/shepherd companion for 10 years; Chiazza, the frenetic border collie mix and Josh's "daughter"; and Skeena, the wiggle-butt mini-Aussie mix we rescued from the Navajo Nation. We enjoy hiking, cycling, running, travel, photography, throwing a frisbee 18,000 times in a row for Chiazza, and any moments we have away from work.
Currently I'm organizing health clinics, heartworm treatment, and spay/neuter clinics for dogs rescued from the Katrina aftermath and residing in our valley.
