After almost a year of living on the beach, and becoming known (and loved!) by many visitors and locals in Akumal, Mr. Cejas has found a loving new home in Northern California.
We first met Cejas in May 2003 on our first trip to Akumal - he was literally the first "local" we met, as we checked into the Hotel Akumal Caribe! He ran in front of our car (and luckily didn't chase it!) as we drove up to our room from the Arch. He would greet us each morning at Turtle Bay Cafe and share our breakfast with us, and then join us for lunch and happy hour at the Lol Ha snack bar. In a short week, he had captured our hearts!
After two more trips to Akumal, in September 2003 and February 2004, and seeing Cejas each time, it became harder and harder to leave him, breaking my heart. So in April, a friend of mine and I travelled to Akumal, with crate, leash and collar and new nametag, to bring Cejas home. After a now-comic chase around the beach trying to capture him, he came home with me to San Francisco on April 21.
He is adjusting well to his new home - although seems to shiver when the fog rolls in and the temperature drops below 60 degrees! He loves his new sister, Missy and they spend the days wrestling on the deck and chasing each other through the back yard. He is getting used to his seven new cat friends too, and they to him. He is terrified of a leash, probably since the only time he had one on, he was being mistreated, so we are working with him on learning that a leash means FUN things, like walks, trips to the beach, rides in the car... He is such a loving, trusting, sweet boy and so eager to please, that I'm sure he will progress very quickly! My old Golden Retriever, Biscuit, passed away the week after Cejas came home with me, and I believe he was meant to come with me at this time to help me through the loss of her.
If we can be of assistance to anyone who is interested in adopting a dog from Akumal, please let us know! We highly recommend it!
