The Kidnapping of Nadia

As far as thank you's go a definite thanks to Maureen for donating a wonderful all-inclusive day to all of us at xel-ha. What a treat! As far as kidnapping Nadia goes it was more that she kidnapped our hearts! Early one morning Juli and I were out walking to breakfast in Tulum. A beautiful little dog came bounding (across 4 lanes of traffic no less) up to us with a smile on her face as if we were the people she had been looking for all day. It was as if she recognized us as some friends she had been looking for in the crowd. She was a little brown Mexican dog probably under a year and not spayed. We said our hellos and we were hooked! She was obviously not very street smart as she was already limping on a hind leg Upon further inspection it looked like a fracture that was in the last stages of healing. She tried desperately to get us to play with her by grabbing a drinking straw of the ground and throwing it in the air. I thought I would please her by finding a stick and throwing it for her, only she thought I was going to beat her with it. I realized instantly that our trust was shaky and got rid of the stick and sweet-talked her back to me. She was very forgiving and starting running and playing again. When we weren't giving her the attention she felt she deserved she would wrap her legs around ours and start to bite our shoes. At one point she really wanted Juli's attention and grabbed the hem of her shorts and began to pull. Juli was gently telling her to let go, but she continued to tug until Juli's blank undies were showing and the locals at the bus stop began howling at the site of this gringo being molested by a street dog. They did try to scare her off, but we assured them we wanted to be harassed by her! She had won our hearts. Because she kept weaving in and out of traffic we decided we needed to get some control of her and get her to safety quickly. We knew this gal was special and we wanted the best for her. I took off my belt and slipped it over her neck. She was happy to come to the clinic with us and spent the whole week working her magic on everyone there. He habit of biting shoes and tugging at skirt or short hems earned her the name "Nadia" short for Naughty! She was absolutely magical. She had this way of making you fall in love with and to watch her do it to every person she came in contact with was really entertaining. Mostly because I knew that one of these people would end up taking her. She lives now somewhere in Akumal and I am not sure with whom. i am so glad she has a home! I really wanted to bring her back, but you know the difficulty and expense of that! Anyway, thanks for listening and meet Nadia.........
