Lola in Coba
coba may 2005 robin
Many of the animals in Coba were skittish and wary of people. While we were there we witnessed several locals abusing the street dogs by kicking them or throwing rocks at them. So, you can imagine our surprise when a young bright eyed black dog with white paws came bounding up to us all smiles with her tail wagging enthusiastically. We decided to take her to the clinic with us that morning and we soon came to find out that she was an un-owned street dog that the locals called “Lola.” We decided to spay Lola in the hope that some deserving person would then give her a home. Although Lola appeared healthy on the outside, during and after surgery it was soon evident that she had some health issues that caused her to bleed excessively. We also discovered that Lola was pregnant with what was likely to be her first litter ever. The surgery was long and involved causing much worry in the clinic. We would have been devastated to lose the friendliest dog in Coba.

After surgery she received a lot of attention and TLC and by that evening it was apparent that Lola was determined to live to live to lick many more hands and faces. She enjoyed a delicious dinner of soft tacos and canned tuna that night, and went home with a local volunteer for some overnight TLC. It was very difficult to leave Lola behind the next day as we left Coba but we soon received word that she was doing great and had been placed in a loving home.
