Welcome to VIDAS
Mouse in Akumal
coba may 2005
We met Mouse late one evening in Akumal. We were at the Turtle Bay Bakery for a VIDAS fundraiser when one of the local volunteers arrived with a tri colored tiger striped kitten she had just picked up on the side of the road. The kitten was only about 12 weeks old and was very scared. One of the volunteers was holding and talking to her in an effort to comfort the frightened kitty. In the process she said “meows” which eventually evolved into “mouse,” her name for the duration of the time we had her. We ended up taking the kitten back to the house where we were staying and made her a house in the bottom of our closet. However, that was short lived as we soon discovered that she would cry unless she was allowed to cuddle with someone in bed. The next day as she explored her new surroundings, she started to get accustomed to us. She would purr and cuddle and knead with her paws but if taken by surprise might revert to a quick hiss followed by and inquisitive meow...almost as if apologizing for her outburst. By the third day she was in full kitten mode playing with anything and everything that touched the floor or dangled off the side of furniture. Even though she had never seen kitten food or a litter box before, she was a fast learner and took to them both immediately. We soon had to leave Akumal and travel to Coba, so Mouse was taken in by some friends of Jen at the Turtle Bay Bakery where she had another kitten friend, Jonah, to wreak havoc with. We were reunited with Mouse, who had been renamed Luna, at the Tulum clinic where she was spayed and Jonah was neutered. At the clinic, Jen gave us an update…Mouse/Luna had been placed in a home where she would grow up with lots of love and attention.
