Welcome to VIDAS
Shu Shu
coba may 2005
When we travel to Tulum, we are often very fortunate to have housing donated to us by Good Samaritans who are VIDAS supporters in the States. This year, both of the houses that were donated happened to be managed by the same local woman, Arlene, who lives next door to one of the houses we were staying in. Arlene lives in Tankah year-round and is very popular with the Americans that visit the properties that she manages. She is a sassy woman who likes to bust your chops but underneath is all has a heart of gold. Arlene caught up with us on the beach the day before our Tulum clinic was to open and let us know that she had recently adopted a lively puppy from a litter born near the other donated house. She said his name was Shu Shu, which is French, and that she would be one of the first people in line the next day to get him neutered. (I think she secretly hoped the procedure would slow him down a little bit) She also let us know in so many words that she expected priority treatment and we assured her that is exactly what she would get! Sure enough…Arlene and Shu Shu were there the next morning. Shu Shu had just been on his first ever car ride and was eager to see us, evidenced by the fact that he dragged the approximately 5” tall Arlene into the yard to get in line. Shu Shu’s surgery went very well and we discharged him to Arlene that afternoon with the typical instructions to keep him quiet for a few days. I’m pretty sure Arlene’s response was “yeah right!” but I couldn’t tell as Shu Shu was in the process of dragging her back to the car…so much for slowing him down. A few days later, we convinced Arlene to bring him by for a visit and a photo. She rolled her eyes and said something about us being “ball busters” and how it would take her a while to get his harness on, but never-the-less, an exuberant Shu Shu dragged his owner down the beach a few minutes later to see us. I think it is safe to say that Arlene has finally met her match! She is a good sport and through her exasperation we could see just how much she loves the little guy. We wish both Arelene and Shu Shu many happy years of romping on the beach together!
